HomeGlossaryIRR (Internet Routing Registry)

IRR (Internet Routing Registry)

Also known as: internet routing registry, route object

A distributed database of route objects declaring which ASN intends to originate which prefix, used to build routing filters.

The IRR is a set of databases (maintained by RIRs and others) where operators publish route and route6 objects: statements that a given prefix is expected to be originated by a given ASN. Networks generate prefix filters for their peers and customers from this data.

IRR predates RPKI and is less strongly authenticated - anyone can create objects in some registries - but it remains widely used for building AS-path and prefix filters, and complements RPKI's cryptographic origin validation.
