Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IPv4 transfer?
Since the free pools of IPv4 addresses ran out, organisations that need more addresses buy them from organisations that no longer use them. The Regional Internet Registry (RIR) then moves the registration to the new holder and publishes the transfer in its transfer log.
What is an inter-RIR transfer?
A transfer where the address space moves from one registry's region to another, for example from ARIN (North America) to RIPE NCC (Europe). ARIN, APNIC, LACNIC and RIPE NCC allow inter-RIR transfers under compatible policies; both registries list such a transfer in their logs.
Are mergers and acquisitions included?
Yes. Registries also publish changes of holder caused by mergers and acquisitions. They are included in the totals and marked as “M&A” in the tables.
How often is this data updated?
Once a day, from the transfer logs the five RIRs publish. Transfer dates are the dates the registry processed the transfer.
