HomeGlossaryTransit (IP Transit)

Transit (IP Transit)

Also known as: IP transit, upstream provider

A paid service where a provider carries a customer network's traffic to and from the entire internet.

Transit is the paid relationship that gives a network reachability to everywhere it does not peer directly. A customer buys transit from one or more upstream providers, who announce the customer's prefixes to the rest of the world and carry return traffic back.

A network's set of transit providers is exactly what it declares in an ASPA object, which is what makes AS-path validation possible.
