Bogon

Also known as: bogon prefix, martian address

An IP address or prefix that should never appear in the public routing table - private, reserved, or unallocated space.

Bogons are addresses that have no business being routed on the public internet: RFC 1918 private ranges, loopback, link-local, documentation prefixes, and space not yet allocated by IANA or the RIRs. Seeing a bogon as a route origin or source usually indicates a misconfiguration or spoofing.

Operators filter bogons at their edges. Because the unallocated portion changes as IANA delegates space, bogon filters need periodic updates or they will wrongly block newly legitimate prefixes.
