RIR (Regional Internet Registry)
Also known as: regional internet registry
One of five regional bodies (RIPE NCC, ARIN, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC) that allocate IP address space and ASNs.
IP addresses and ASNs are handed out by five Regional Internet Registries, each covering part of the world: RIPE NCC (Europe, Middle East, Central Asia), ARIN (North America), APNIC (Asia-Pacific), LACNIC (Latin America and the Caribbean), and AFRINIC (Africa).
The RIRs sit under IANA in the allocation hierarchy and publish delegated-stats files recording every allocation. Which RIR a resource comes from tells you where it was registered and whose WHOIS and RPKI trust anchor governs it.
