IXP (Internet Exchange Point)
Also known as: internet exchange point, internet exchange, peering exchange
Physical infrastructure where many networks interconnect to exchange traffic directly, reducing cost and latency versus paid transit.
An Internet Exchange Point is a shared switching fabric - usually in a datacenter - where networks meet to peer. Instead of paying an upstream to carry traffic between two networks, both connect to the IXP and exchange it directly over a common peering LAN.
IXPs improve latency, cut transit costs, and keep regional traffic local. Large exchanges host hundreds of networks and carry terabits of traffic. Each member connects with its ASN and announces prefixes to peers across the exchange's address block.
