ROV (Route Origin Validation)
Also known as: route origin validation
The process of checking a BGP route's origin ASN and prefix length against published ROAs, yielding valid, invalid, or not-found.
ROV is what a router or validator does with ROAs. For each received route it looks up any ROAs covering the prefix and returns a state: valid (an authorizing ROA matches the origin and length), invalid (a ROA covers the prefix but the origin or length is wrong), or not-found (no ROA exists).
A common policy is to accept valid and not-found routes and drop invalid ones. That single rule blocks the majority of accidental origin leaks and simple hijacks without needing every prefix in the world to have a ROA.
